If you’re vacationing in Door County this summer and looking for an unforgettable adventure on the water, now is the time to book a salmon and trout fishing charter. At Big Bite Adventures, we specialize in guided fishing trips throughout Door County, Wisconsin, offering both morning and evening outings out of some of the area’s most iconic ports—Baileys Harbor, Sturgeon Bay, Washington Island, Sister Bay, Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Egg Harbor.
Right now, we’re running our peak Lake Michigan salmon and trout trips out of Baileys Harbor and Sturgeon Bay, and the bite has been nothing short of incredible. If you’re searching for things to do in Door County, this is your chance to experience the thrill of battling big water salmon and trout during one of the most productive stretches of the season.
Epic Salmon and Trout Action on the Lake Michigan Side
Fishing in Door County remains exceptional as we push into late July. The salmon and trout bite has been consistently strong on the Lake Michigan side, with multiple fish in the 5 to 15-pound range and trophy kings pushing up to 27 pounds hitting the deck just this past week. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-timer, this is a bucket-list fishing experience that you won’t want to miss.
Our morning trips—running from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m.—have been especially productive this week, with cooler water temperatures and early feeding windows making for fast action. While we also offer evening charters from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., the sunrise bite has outperformed during this current pattern.
We still have a few morning openings available this week and next, but they’re going fast. If you’re visiting Sturgeon Bay, Baileys Harbor, or anywhere in Door County and looking to get on the water before the bite slows down, now’s the time to text or call 920-883-7918 to lock in your date.
Fishing Patterns and Techniques: What’s Working Right Now
Our crews have been fishing relatively shallow for this time of year, working depths between 70 and 150 feet, and finding success on a mix of spoons. This week, spoons have significantly outperformed flasher-fly combos, and we’ve even seen a few bonus brown trout in the mix, especially during our early-morning setups.
If you’re looking for a chance at a multi-species catch, now is a great time. While Chinook salmon have been our primary target, coho and brown trout are also making appearances in our catches.
Great Fishing From Washington Island to Baileys Harbor
While Baileys Harbor has produced the most consistent bite this week, we’ve also seen solid numbers of salmon from Washington Island down through Sturgeon Bay. The fish are scattered throughout the system right now, and our guides have been able to locate active schools by staying mobile and adapting to daily changes in water temp and bait movement.
We just wrapped up the Kewaunee/Door County (KD) Salmon Tournament, which means fewer boats on the water this week—a welcome break that usually leads to better, less pressured fishing. This is often one of our favorite windows of the summer: solid fish, reduced traffic, and wide-open action for clients looking to experience true Door County sport fishing.
Family-Friendly Charter Options — Kids Fish Free!
One of the things that sets our charter service apart is our commitment to making the experience fun and affordable for the whole family. On our salmon and trout trips, kids under 12 fish for free. That’s right—bring the whole crew and introduce the next generation to the thrill of trolling the big waters of Lake Michigan. Whether you’re staying in Fish Creek, Sister Bay, Egg Harbor, or Ephraim, it’s a short drive to some of the best salmon fishing the Great Lakes have to offer.
We regularly host families, couples, and groups of friends visiting Door County looking for something unique and exciting to do during their vacation. Our five-hour charters are long enough to get into quality fish but short enough to work into your vacation schedule.
Book Now Before Prime Season Slips Away
The salmon and trout fishing season in Door County typically stays hot through the middle of August, and we continue running charters through Labor Day weekend. After that, we shift gears to our bass, walleye, and perch trips on the Bay of Green Bay. So if you’re dreaming of a big king salmon or a beautiful steelhead bending the rod, don’t wait. These next few weeks are prime time.
Starting September 1st, we begin focusing on smallmouth bass and walleye fishing, which remains strong into the fall. But for now, it’s all about salmon and trout. And with the quality of fish we’re seeing, you’ll want to be on the water before summer slips away.
