Spring is getting closer here in Door County, and with the ice starting to disappear and longer days on the horizon, it’s the time of year when we start hearing from anglers and families planning their trips to Door County, Wisconsin. Every year around this time our phone starts ringing more often with people looking to lock in their spring and summer fishing trips, and 2026 is shaping up to be another busy season on the water.

At Big Bite Adventures, our fishing charter and guide service operates from April through November across some of the best fisheries in the Midwest. Door County offers incredible opportunities for smallmouth bass, walleye, salmon, and trout, and each season brings something a little different to the table. Whether you're an experienced angler or someone who has never picked up a fishing rod before, a guided fishing trip in Door County is one of the best ways to experience the water and create lasting memories.

Right now we are actively booking April, May, and June smallmouth bass and walleye fishing trips in Door County. Spring fishing in Door County is one of the most exciting times of the year because the fish are shallow, aggressive, and feeding heavily after the long winter. As water temperatures start to warm, smallmouth bass move into shallow areas around rock structure, gravel, and shoreline transitions. Walleyes also become very active during this time, creating excellent opportunities for anglers looking to catch quality fish.

One of the reasons spring fishing trips are so popular is the style of fishing involved. During April and May we often fish with finesse presentations, light tackle, and techniques that allow anglers to feel every bite. When a big Door County smallmouth bass eats a bait in shallow water, it is an experience you won’t forget. The fish are powerful, aggressive, and known for their incredible fights.

The Door County smallmouth bass fishery is widely known as one of the best in the country. Anglers travel from all over the Midwest and across the United States to experience bass fishing here. The clear water, rocky shorelines, and healthy forage base create the perfect environment for growing large smallmouth bass. Spring is one of the best times to target them because they are concentrated in predictable areas and actively feeding.

Walleyes are another highlight of our spring fishing trips. The Door County walleye fishery continues to grow in popularity, and every year we see excellent numbers of fish. Walleyes in the spring are often found in relatively shallow water where they can be targeted with a variety of techniques. It’s common for anglers to experience steady action, and many trips produce multiple fish along with the chance at a true trophy walleye.

For anglers planning a spring vacation or an early season trip to Wisconsin, April and May are fantastic months to be on the water. The weather is starting to warm, the boat traffic is minimal, and the fishing can be outstanding. Many of our guests say spring trips are their favorite time to fish Door County because the fish are so active and the scenery is incredible.

As we move into June, our season begins to transition. Early June can still offer great opportunities for smallmouth bass and walleyes, but it also marks the beginning of our Door County salmon and trout fishing season. From June through July and August, salmon and trout fishing becomes the primary focus for many anglers visiting the area.

Salmon and trout fishing on Lake Michigan is one of the most popular fishing experiences in Wisconsin. Anglers have the opportunity to catch king salmon, coho salmon, lake trout, and rainbow trout while fishing the deep, clear waters surrounding Door County. These trips are action-packed and perfect for families, groups of friends, or anyone looking to experience big-water fishing.

Our salmon fishing charters in Door County are especially popular during the summer months when visitors from all over the country come to enjoy the beauty of the peninsula. A day on the water targeting salmon is a great addition to any Door County vacation. It’s common for families to book a morning trip and then spend the rest of the day exploring the many attractions, restaurants, and beaches that make Door County such a special destination.

Salmon are known for their strength and speed, and when one hits the line it doesn’t take long for everyone on the boat to feel the excitement. Watching a rod bend over as a salmon takes off on a long run is something that never gets old. For many anglers, their first salmon fishing trip quickly becomes a yearly tradition.

The good news heading into this season is that both the salmon and trout populations in Lake Michigan continue to look strong. Healthy forage levels and solid stocking numbers have helped maintain a productive fishery, and we are expecting another great summer of fishing opportunities.

One of the things we enjoy most about running fishing charters in Door County is sharing these experiences with families. Many of our guests are visiting Door County on vacation and are looking for something unique and memorable to do together. A guided fishing trip offers exactly that. It’s a chance to spend time outdoors, enjoy the water, and experience the excitement of catching fish.

Fishing trips are also great for anglers of all skill levels. Some of our guests fish regularly and are looking to learn more about the area and techniques we use, while others are stepping onto a boat for the very first time. Either way, we enjoy helping people learn, improve their skills, and most importantly have a great time on the water.

Door County truly offers something special when it comes to fishing opportunities. With access to both the Bay of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, anglers can experience a wide variety of fisheries throughout the season. From shallow-water smallmouth bass in the spring to deep-water salmon in the summer and fall bass and walleye fishing later in the year, there is always something happening on the water.

Because of the popularity of Door County as a vacation destination, many fishing charter dates fill up well in advance. Spring smallmouth bass and walleye trips in April and May are already starting to book, and summer salmon and trout trips in June, July, and August tend to fill quickly as well.
